If you need to fix your credit report in order to obtain a loan, rent an apartment, buy a car, or even obtain some jobs, there are some ways to make this happen. Below are some credit restoration tips that could fix your credit report.

Check Your Credit Reports

Most people still do not appreciate how important checking their credit report regularly is. In addition to concerns about identity theft, there is the very real possibility that your report contains errors.

An account may be in your report that belongs to someone else. This could happen if their name is similar to yours. You may have some negative information due to this, which will lower your credit score. This type of mistake will keep you from getting credit entirely or cause you to have to pay higher interest rates. If this happens, you need to fix your credit report

Keep accurate records

You need to keep an accurate record in case you have problems and want to fix credit report. Make copies of the reports you have questions about and any proof you have to support this. This helps a lot if you need to fix credit.

Create a special place or file to keep your credit report and any other related information together. Document all phones calls, emails, or any other communication concerning your credit problem. The road to fix your credit report can involve legal issues, so you want to be prepared.

Contact the Credit Bureau

The next step to fix your credit report is to send a written letter to any credit bureau whose report contains the error. In the letter, explain what is in error and why. Attach documentation to the letter, including a copy of the market credit report. Be as clear and concise in your wording as possible. Keep a copy of the letter in your possession. Sending the letter registered or certified mail is an excellent idea, too. That way you’ll have a record of when your letter was received.

You can go to the website of most credit bureaus and make your report about false information but this method is not recommended. You can also do it by phone to avoid giving out sensitive information online, but this is not the best way either. You need to submit your dispute through the mail with proof of delivery requiring a signature. This will ensure you know when they received your information.

Talk to the creditor

Although you might think you only need to fix your credit report by talking to Equifax or one of the bureaus, you’ll have the best luck if you also contact the creditor. Generally, you’ll want to speak to the billing department because they are the ones providing the negative information or they can contact you with the correct people to talk to within the company. Remain calm and professional during the discussion. Try to keep in mind that most of these cases are not malicious; they are matters of misunderstanding. You won’t accomplish anything by screaming at the people and losing your temper.

Watch for the results

After completing this process, wait and see what happens. If your credit report is corrected the credit bureau should send you a free report reflecting the changes. If you fail to fix credit report, go through the steps again until you have it all cleared up.
